How to choose a hair system base material
By HairSystems.in · Updated 12 May 2026

Key takeaways
- Lace gives the most invisible hairline and the shortest life; poly-skin gives the longest life and the most visible edge.
- Monofilament is the best balance for daily wear and gives realistic parting movement.
- Hybrid bases — mono or lace top with a poly perimeter — are the default recommendation for humid Indian cities.
- Base thickness of 0.10mm and above survives Indian summers noticeably better than ultra-thin 0.03mm skin.
The base is the part nobody photographs and everybody feels. It determines how the hairline reads at arm's length, how long the unit survives, and how often you will be back in the chair.
The four families
Every product name on the market is a variation on these four.
| Base | Realism | Durability | Breathability | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| French / Swiss lace | Excellent | Low | High | Medium–high |
| Poly-skin (thin) | Very good | Low | None | Medium |
| Poly-skin (thick) | Fair | High | None | Low |
| Monofilament | Very good | High | Medium | High |
| Hybrid | Very good | Medium–high | Medium | Medium–high |
Match the base to the life you actually live
Lifestyle beats specification. Pick the row that describes your week.
- Office work, low sweat, wants the best hairline: lace front with mono crown.
- Daily commute in Mumbai heat, helmet or hard hat: hybrid with a 0.10mm poly perimeter.
- Swimmer or gym five days a week: thick poly-skin, tape attachment, accept a slightly visible edge.
- Wedding, shoot or one-off event: ultra-thin skin, best realism, short life.
- First-time wearer, unsure: mono top with poly perimeter — forgiving to handle and easy to service.
Density and hairline are separate decisions
Base choice sets the ceiling on realism; density choice decides whether you hit it. A 130% density unit on the best lace still reads as a wig on a 42-year-old scalp.
For men over 35 we fit 90–110% density with a graduated, slightly irregular hairline and a few single knots at the very front. Perfection at the hairline is what gives systems away.
