Hair toppers for women: a practical guide

A topper covers a thinning parting or crown while clipping into the hair you still have. It is the least invasive option available for female pattern thinning.

Will it work for you?

Yes, if you still have reasonable density at the sides and back to anchor the clips.

Sizing is driven by the widest point of the thinning area, plus two centimetres of overlap.

If shedding is active — post-partum or thyroid-related — we fit clip-in only and re-check at three months.

Construction that matters

Silk top for the parting. Everything else is a compromise you will see in daylight.

Root-shadowed colour so the parting does not read as a solid block.

Length matched to your own ends, not to a catalogue length.

Clip safety

Rotate clip positions across three placements so no single spot takes daily tension.

Never sleep in a clipped topper.

If you see short broken hairs at a clip site, come in and we move it.

Toppers, clips and Indian hair textures

Most toppers sold in India are made on a Caucasian-hair mould with a straight-hair assumption baked in. On naturally wavy Indian hair that mismatch shows the first humid day, when your own hair waves and the topper stays straight at the parting.

The second common mismatch is clip pressure. Post-partum and thyroid-related shedding leaves anchor hair fragile exactly when a topper is most wanted, so clip placement has to be planned around where your hair is still strong - and moved as that changes.

We fit toppers on a three-position clip rotation for this reason, and re-check the anchor hair at three months. It is the difference between a topper that helps and one that quietly makes the thinning worse.

Before you commit: a checklist

Take this to any studio, including ours. If a supplier will not answer these plainly, that is the answer.

  1. 1Check that the parting construction is silk or mono - anything else shows knots at the part line.
  2. 2Ask for a curl match against a sample of your own hair, not a catalogue swatch.
  3. 3Have clip positions planned around your strongest anchor hair and rotate them weekly.
  4. 4Take the topper off before sleeping.
  5. 5Re-assess fit after three months if you are in an active shedding phase.

Frequently asked questions

Can I dye a topper to match a colour change?
Darker, yes. Lifting a topper lighter damages the hair and we do not recommend it.
How long does a topper last?
Eight to fourteen months on a silk or mono top with normal wear.
