Custom Toupee vs Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
BeforeAfterThe short answer
Density you can style, or a shadow you never think about
For front-to-crown loss, SMP can rebuild a hairline convincingly at stubble length and asks nothing of you afterwards. That is a real advantage over a system that needs servicing every few weeks.
The trade is absolute: you are choosing a shaved head permanently, because SMP stops working the moment the surrounding hair is long enough to show contrast. If you want hair with length at the front, a toupee is the only one of the two that delivers it.
Side by side
| Custom Toupee | Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | ₹12,000 – ₹42,000 | ₹25,000 – ₹80,000 across 2–4 sessions |
| Timeline | Turnaround: 12–15 days fully custom | Time to result: Immediate after the final session |
| Best for | Men at Norwood 4 and above who need front-to-crown coverage rather than a crown patch. | Anyone happy to wear a shaved head who wants the hairline back. |
| Wrong choice if | A full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown patch is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run. | Anyone who wants hair they can run their fingers through or style with length. |
The case for each
Custom Toupee
A full custom toupee for men with larger frontal and mid-scalp loss. Same made-to-measure process as our patches, with a wider coverage area and a front hairline built to your face shape.
In its favour
- Front hairline designed to your temple recession and forehead height
- Graded density: light at the front, fuller through the mid-scalp
- Bleached knots at the parting so no dark dots show under light
- Two-unit rotation option so you always have a dry, clean one to wear
Against it
- A full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown patch is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.
- It is also the wrong choice if you are unwilling to commit to a hairline decision. A toupee lives or dies on its front, and the front has to be designed to your temple recession and forehead height. If you want something you can take off casually with no hairline to manage, a clip-in system suits you better.
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)
Cosmetic tattooing of tiny dots across the scalp to mimic the shadow of closely shaved stubble, or to add the illusion of density between thinning hairs.
In its favour
- No maintenance routine, nothing to remove, nothing to service
- Excellent for a clean shaved-head look with a defined hairline
- Works as a shadow behind thinning hair to reduce visible scalp
Against it
- It is not hair. There is no length, no texture and no styling
- Committing to a permanently short haircut, because it only reads correctly at stubble length
- Pigment fades warm over years and needs a refresh
How we would decide it with you
At a consultation this is settled by looking, not by discussing. We assess the loss area in daylight, check the hair around it, and ask how you actually live — how much you sweat, whether you ride, whether you swim, whether anyone sees you at conversation distance all day.
We sell hair systems, so read the verdict above with that in mind — but we turn away work regularly when the alternative is genuinely the better answer, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have paid us.
Still not sure which?
Tell us your stage of loss and we'll give you a straight recommendation between these two — including when the answer is neither.
Custom Toupee vs Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) — FAQs
- Custom Toupee or Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) — which is better?
- Neither is universally better. For front-to-crown loss, SMP can rebuild a hairline convincingly at stubble length and asks nothing of you afterwards. That is a real advantage over a system that needs servicing every few weeks.
- Which costs more, toupee or SMP?
- Custom Toupee: ₹12,000 – ₹42,000. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP): ₹25,000 – ₹80,000 across 2–4 sessions. Comparing headline prices is misleading on its own — the number that matters is the twelve-month cost including servicing and replacement, and the two options are rarely on the same replacement cycle.
- Can I switch from one to the other later?
- In most cases yes, and plenty of clients do exactly that. Nothing here is a permanent commitment except surgery and micropigmentation, both of which are worth being certain about before you start.
