Custom Toupee vs Ready-Made / Stock Patch

The same man shown with thinning hair on one side and a fitted hair system on the otherBeforeAfter
What coverage looks like when it is specified correctly — the question underneath custom toupee versus ready-made / stock patch.

The short answer

A designed hairline is the one thing stock cannot supply

A toupee lives or dies at the front, and the front is exactly what a stock unit cannot do. Single-strand knotting, bleached knots, graded density and an irregular leading edge are all manufacturing decisions made against your face, not a size chart.

For front-to-crown coverage the gap between stock and custom is far wider than it is for a crown patch, because a crown patch can hide under surrounding hair and a toupee has nothing to hide behind.

Best forMen at Norwood 4 and above who need front-to-crown coverage rather than a crown patch.A first trial, or a spare to keep in a bag for emergencies.
Wrong choice ifA full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown patch is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.Daily wear where the front hairline is visible to anyone at conversation distance.

The case for each

Custom Toupee

A full custom toupee for men with larger frontal and mid-scalp loss. Same made-to-measure process as our patches, with a wider coverage area and a front hairline built to your face shape.

In its favour

  • Front hairline designed to your temple recession and forehead height
  • Graded density: light at the front, fuller through the mid-scalp
  • Bleached knots at the parting so no dark dots show under light
  • Two-unit rotation option so you always have a dry, clean one to wear

Against it

  • A full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown patch is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.
  • It is also the wrong choice if you are unwilling to commit to a hairline decision. A toupee lives or dies on its front, and the front has to be designed to your temple recession and forehead height. If you want something you can take off casually with no hairline to manage, a clip-in system suits you better.

Ready-Made / Stock Patch

A pre-manufactured unit in a standard size and shape, bought off a shelf or online and trimmed to approximate your loss area.

In its favour

  • Cheapest possible entry point, and available immediately
  • A genuinely reasonable way to test whether you can live with a system
  • No template appointment, no manufacturing wait

Against it

  • The perimeter follows a factory curve, not your hairline, so edges lift
  • Machine-knotted fronts are dense and blunt where a real hairline is sparse
  • Colour and grey percentage are approximate at best
  • Shorter life, because thicker bases are used to survive shipping and handling

How we would decide it with you

At a consultation this is settled by looking, not by discussing. We assess the loss area in daylight, check the hair around it, and ask how you actually live — how much you sweat, whether you ride, whether you swim, whether anyone sees you at conversation distance all day.

We sell hair systems, so read the verdict above with that in mind — but we turn away work regularly when the alternative is genuinely the better answer, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have paid us.

Custom Toupee vs Ready-Made / Stock Patch — FAQs

Custom Toupee or Ready-Made / Stock Patch — which is better?
Neither is universally better. A toupee lives or dies at the front, and the front is exactly what a stock unit cannot do. Single-strand knotting, bleached knots, graded density and an irregular leading edge are all manufacturing decisions made against your face, not a size chart.
Which costs more, toupee or stock patch?
Custom Toupee: ₹12,000 – ₹42,000. Ready-Made / Stock Patch: ₹3,000 – ₹8,000 per unit. Comparing headline prices is misleading on its own — the number that matters is the twelve-month cost including servicing and replacement, and the two options are rarely on the same replacement cycle.
Can I switch from one to the other later?
In most cases yes, and plenty of clients do exactly that. Nothing here is a permanent commitment except surgery and micropigmentation, both of which are worth being certain about before you start.
