Custom Toupee vs Hair Weaving / Tracking

What coverage looks like when it is specified correctly — the question underneath custom toupee versus hair weaving / tracking.

The short answer

Continuous wear is not worth a permanent trade

The appeal of weaving is obvious: it stays on through washing, sleeping and exercise with no re-bonding. For a large front-to-crown unit, though, the weight is carried by a track of your own hair — and a toupee is a heavier unit than a crown patch.

A properly applied liquid bond gives three to six weeks of the same continuous wear with the load on skin rather than follicles. If adhesive sensitivity is what pushed you toward weaving, micro rings are a more controllable middle ground than a full track.

Best forMen at Norwood 4 and above who need front-to-crown coverage rather than a crown patch.Adhesive-sensitive wearers with strong anchor hair who want continuous wear.
Wrong choice ifA full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown patch is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.Anyone whose own hair is fragile. Permanent traction damage is a real and common outcome.

The case for each

Custom Toupee

A full custom toupee for men with larger frontal and mid-scalp loss. Same made-to-measure process as our patches, with a wider coverage area and a front hairline built to your face shape.

In its favour

  • Front hairline designed to your temple recession and forehead height
  • Graded density: light at the front, fuller through the mid-scalp
  • Bleached knots at the parting so no dark dots show under light
  • Two-unit rotation option so you always have a dry, clean one to wear

Against it

  • A full toupee is over-specified if your loss is confined to the crown. You would be paying for front-to-crown coverage and a designed hairline you do not need, and the larger bonded area means more adhesive, more sweat and more servicing. A crown patch is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.
  • It is also the wrong choice if you are unwilling to commit to a hairline decision. A toupee lives or dies on its front, and the front has to be designed to your temple recession and forehead height. If you want something you can take off casually with no hairline to manage, a clip-in system suits you better.

Hair Weaving / Tracking

A system tied or stitched into your existing hair along a braided track, so nothing is bonded to the scalp and the unit stays on continuously for weeks.

In its favour

  • No adhesive touches the scalp at all
  • Stays on through washing, sleeping and exercise without re-bonding
  • Suits people with genuine adhesive sensitivity

Against it

  • Sustained traction on the anchor hair, which can cause traction alopecia
  • The track loosens as your own hair grows, so tightening is not optional
  • Scalp underneath is hard to clean properly between appointments

How we would decide it with you

At a consultation this is settled by looking, not by discussing. We assess the loss area in daylight, check the hair around it, and ask how you actually live — how much you sweat, whether you ride, whether you swim, whether anyone sees you at conversation distance all day.

We sell hair systems, so read the verdict above with that in mind — but we turn away work regularly when the alternative is genuinely the better answer, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have paid us.

Custom Toupee vs Hair Weaving / Tracking — FAQs

Custom Toupee or Hair Weaving / Tracking — which is better?
Neither is universally better. The appeal of weaving is obvious: it stays on through washing, sleeping and exercise with no re-bonding. For a large front-to-crown unit, though, the weight is carried by a track of your own hair — and a toupee is a heavier unit than a crown patch.
Which costs more, toupee or hair weaving?
Custom Toupee: ₹12,000 – ₹42,000. Hair Weaving / Tracking: ₹6,000 – ₹20,000 plus tightening every 6–8 weeks. Comparing headline prices is misleading on its own — the number that matters is the twelve-month cost including servicing and replacement, and the two options are rarely on the same replacement cycle.
Can I switch from one to the other later?
In most cases yes, and plenty of clients do exactly that. Nothing here is a permanent commitment except surgery and micropigmentation, both of which are worth being certain about before you start.
