Shedding on a hair system means something different from shedding on your own scalp, because there is no follicle underneath producing a replacement strand. Cause two: brushing and detangling technique

Cause four: chemical stripping from the wrong products
Sulphate shampoo strips the natural oils that keep a knot's strands flexible, and over repeated washes the knots become brittle and shed under normal handling that would not have affected them otherwise. This cause is slower and less dramatic than a cutting mistake, which is part of why it often goes unrecognised until the shedding has been ongoing for weeks.

Re-toning restores faded colour, but the toning process itself is a mild chemical treatment, and knots that are re-toned repeatedly in quick succession without a gap to recover can become brittle at exactly the point where they are tied into the base. This is a less common cause than cutting or brushing mistakes, but it shows up in wearers who chase colour touch-ups frequently rather than on the standard few-months schedule.
The practical guard against this is spacing: treating re-toning as a periodic service tied to visible fade rather than a frequent top-up, and mentioning to whoever is doing the work if a unit has been toned recently, so the treatment strength can be adjusted rather than repeated at full strength on hair that has not had time to recover.
When shedding means book a repair, not wait it out
