What happens at a first hair system fitting?

Checking the base before anything is bonded
Before any adhesive or tape comes out, the technician places the unbonded base against the client's scalp and checks it directly against the original template — does the edge follow the traced hairline, does the shape sit correctly over the area of loss, does the colour and density look right against the client's current hair rather than the hair they had at the templating appointment weeks earlier. Hair and skin can both change slightly in the intervening 12 to 15 days, and this check is where any drift gets caught.
Any small trimming or edge adjustment needed happens at this stage, before bonding, because it is far easier to correct a dry-fit base than one that is already taped or glued in place. This is also when the client sees the finished piece for the first time and can flag anything that looks obviously off before it is committed to the scalp.
Preparing the scalp
The area the base will sit against is cleaned and, depending on the attachment method chosen, treated to help the bond hold — this matters more for tape and liquid adhesive than for clips or micro-rings, which anchor to existing hair rather than to skin directly. Any natural hair at the edges that will be clipped or ringed is sectioned out and prepared so the attachment points sit evenly around the base rather than clustered in one spot.
This preparation step is also where the attachment method itself gets confirmed rather than assumed. A client who requested tape at consultation but has since developed sensitive skin, or who has changed their mind about visit frequency, can switch to clips or a different adhesive at this point, since nothing has been bonded yet.
Bonding the system
With the base checked and the scalp prepared, the actual attachment happens: tape applied and pressed to hold for five to ten days, liquid adhesive applied and given time to bond for a 12-to-15-day cycle, clips fitted at anchor points around natural hair, or micro-rings clamped in place to be tightened again every six to eight weeks. This part of the appointment is quick relative to the rest of it, since the preparation and checking beforehand is what makes the bonding itself straightforward.

Cutting and blending
Once bonded, the system is cut into the client's own hair, not before, because cutting a hairpiece before it sits against a moving, living head produces a shape that never quite matches once it is actually worn. The technician blends the system's hair into whatever remains of the client's own at the join, working to remove any single line where one clearly ends and the other begins.
This is also when styling choices — parting, length, how the front is combed — get set for the first time, based on how the client actually wants to wear it day to day rather than how it looked on the workbench. A first fitting typically ends with the client seeing the completed, worn result in a mirror for the first time, which is the moment most of the earlier templating and matching decisions get judged against reality.
What to expect in the days after
A newly bonded system needs a short adjustment period, both for the client to get used to the sensation of wearing it and for the bond itself to fully settle — most studios advise avoiding vigorous washing or swimming for the first day or two after a fresh tape or adhesive application, though clip and ring attachment allow more immediate normal activity. Minor settling of the hair or a very slight loosening at one edge in the first week is common and is what the next scheduled visit is there to address, not a sign anything went wrong.

Settling into a routine

Whichever schedule applies, it starts from the date of this first fitting, not from the date the unit was ordered.
Anyone not prepared to commit to that recurring schedule should treat the first fitting as the moment to reconsider, not six months in. A hair system is not a one-time purchase that then requires nothing further — it is a base unit plus an ongoing service relationship, and the first fitting is where that relationship formally begins.
